How the Rhinoplasty Procedure Works

Before the procedure, all patients are sedated using anesthesia to ensure comfort throughout the surgery. Dr. Kevin Lunde will create an incision either within the nose or along the small strip of tissue separating the nostrils. The type of incision and the shaping of internal structures will depend on the specific alterations needed to improve the appearance and/or function of the nose.

Treating a Deviated Septum

The septum is the flexible cartilage between your nostrils. It can become dislodged or deformed, leading to breathing issues or chronic nasal conditions. To correct this, Dr. Lunde will straighten the septum and secure it to prevent future dislocation. This procedure, known as a septoplasty, is often combined with rhinoplasty due to their similar nature. Combining these procedures offers an opportunity to enhance the nose’s appearance while correcting functional issues.

Reconstruction of the Nose

If a patient wishes to make their nose smaller, Dr. Lunde will reshape the area by removing bone or cartilage. This is the most common reason for purely cosmetic rhinoplasty. Conversely, to balance facial proportions, additional cartilage or bone can be added to the nose. This additional cartilage may come from other body areas, such as the ears or ribs.

Final Steps and Recovery

After the nose has been appropriately adjusted, Dr. Lunde will secure the skin around the area and close the incisions. The recovery process will take several weeks. During the first week, you will be advised to wear a nasal splint to hold everything in place while the nose heals. It is normal to experience some swelling and bruising in the first couple of weeks post-surgery. However, if your symptoms do not subside or resolve within two weeks, contact Dr. Lunde immediately.
