How Does a Chemical Peel Work?

The chemical peel solution penetrates the aged and damaged outer layers of skin and causes there to blister and peel away. The rejuvenating effect takes place as the top layers of skin grow back softer, lighter, and smoother. Frequently, the new skin is also tighter due to the realignment of the collagen in the skin. You can treat the entire face or target specific areas of concern.

Light peels stay within the epidermis, medium peels reach the papillary dermis, where collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid is produced and regulated. Deep peels are able to penetrate through the epidermis and into the reticular dermis maximizing improvement in collagen

Chemical Peel Recovery

Superficial/Light

  • There can be some mild redness and/or swelling immediately following treatment.
  • Mild to moderate flaking can occur up to 1 week following treatment, heaviest on the 3rd and 4th days.
  • After peeling/flaking, skin may look and feel like a mild windburn for 2-3 days.
  • Makeup may be worn once skin has stopped aggressively peeling.
  • Avoid exercise or strenuous activities for 48 hours following treatment.

Medium

  • Skin will be red and glassy following the procedure. Some facial swelling is normal.
  • Over the next several days, skin will turn darker, feel tight, then crack and peel. This will leave you with a new fresh layer of skin. The peel you will experience is like a rattlesnake peeling its skin. You should have minimal pain and no bleeding/scabbing.
  • The average peel takes 5-7 days to complete, while heavily sun damage and wrinkled skin may take 8-10 days to heal.

Deep

  • In the first hours after your face peel, the skin will be red and glassy in appearance. This is usually accompanied by some facial swelling. The eyes may swell shut and the lips can dramatically enlarge. Do not worry! This is normal.
  • In the first 24 to 36 hours, the top layer of the skin will loosen, and amber-colored tissue fluid will form large blisters beneath the skin. The blisters will enlarge and rupture on their own with time. The area around the eyes is often the last region for this skin shedding to occur.
  • Following your procedure, we will want to see you in the office at regularly scheduled intervals to monitor your progress.
  • After 2 weeks, you will be able to apply makeup over healed skin areas.
  • Expect redness to slowly improve over the next few weeks to months.

With all peels, you are advised to avoid UV exposure before and especially after your treatment. Wear SPF as advised by your provider following your chemical peel.

How Many Sessions Do I Need?
